The pictures here are from a beautiful home on Lake Norman, North Carolina.
The job was very close to 100 squares of roofing (10,000 square feet). As
with many homes, this one also had plenty of that 'custom carpentry' , and not in a good way. Many things didn't fit together well
in the rafter framing, and it was my job to close all the holes as I went.

Begining tearoff. We needed a place to set our roof jacks to keep us from sliding off. This building had about 20 squares of roofing. |
This is the detached garage. The shingles are oversized - 5 tabs per shingle. More weight per shingle, but each one covers more area. |
Checking out what's ahead. Note the 12/12 pitch - truely 45 degrees - requires ropes, harnesses and many toeboards. |
Tearoff with help goes quickly. The ladder on the roof jack trick there only works on what's called a 90 degree jack. |
Finishing the front side. The shingles went on in cold weather, making them more stiff and not lay flat just yet. |

My wife and her sister. There is always room for help on my jobs, if they're willing to work - and these two are. |
We used the same brand and color name as what was on there before, yet these shingles have much more white and light blue than the others. |
Fixing rot and poor construction along the way. We used ice/water shield on all the edges and valleys - that stuff is incredible. |
Here's the poolhouse - a small, simple hipped roof of about 6 squares. |
We started tear-off with the first 3 rows, set roofjacks into rafters, then did not have to worry so much about falling. |

The roof decking does not need all the nails and buttonkaps removed - they will not stick above the new ones your installing. |
Finished poolhouse - by far the easiest part of this whole job. |
Finally to the house. We removed, repaired and installed new shingles on small sections before moving on to the next. |
A scaffold at the roof height was very handy - a large 'table' to put the tear-off and supplies, as well as a level place to stand. |
This is the other side of the same end of the house. We shingled across the top and will start this side to match what it needs to join. |

Same end of house after completion. |

On to the next part. This side had several of those carpenter's mistakes that needed repair. That's probably $10,000 worth of copper over that bay window. |
This was uncovered during tearoff. It's no wonder why he had animals making nests in his attic. Terrible workmanship. |
Notice how the roof decking hangs over the facia board and into the gutter about half an inch - how is that suspose to be protected?!? |
This is how we left it. |

A view from the roof. Beautiful sunset over the lake everyday... |
We should all be thankful for a lesser slope to be able to stand on. |
Removing shingles usually pulls some of the decking nails too. All the roof decking should be checked for being securely nailed, and fixed at this time. |
The next section. This house had more hips, valleys, ridges and dormers than one could possibly imagine. And copper flashing with copper nails too. |
We re-worked all the soffit and facia as we went - Hardi-board installed with finishing nails. We predrilled and countersank 2 screws per rafter tail. |

It was always a mad rush to get tar paper on, making it dry again. Then we could breathe a sigh of relief. |

This is just one half of the back of their home, it wrapped the corner and went on just as much again. Beautiful pool with built in hot tub. |
After this picture, my camera was stolen. The rest of the house was completed, and we plan to put more picutres as soon as possible. |
